Some piano care tips...
The piano is not a difficult instrument to maintain in your home, but there are a few things that you can do to help keep it in good condition:-
- Try to keep a steady temperature and humidity in the room where your piano is kept. Make sure it is out of direct sunlight and well away from any central heating radiators. If you have under-floor heating consider at least keeping the piano on a thick piece of carpet or perhaps some kind of rigid insulating material (plywood & foam "sandwich"?).
- By the way, there is no need to keep a jam jar of water in the bottom of the piano. This used to be recommended, but should not be necessary, and is likely to be forgotten in any case. If you're concerned about the humidity (high or low) talk to a tuner about it.
- Have your piano tuned regularly. It is often recommended that your piano should be tuned every 6 months. If this is not possible then try to ensure that it is tuned at least once a year. If it is left longer than this it may require more than one tuning to achieve a stable result, so waiting longer may be a false economy.
