Welcome to dbtuning.co.uk - My name is David Barker and I'm a self-employed piano tuner and technician, living in Southwell, near Nottingham. I regularly work in several parts of the UK, including Nottinghamshire, Devon, & Oxford, and sometimes further afield too - now available for Jersey. Piano Tuning:

I learned piano tuning on the internationally-respected three year course at Newark. I tune by the traditional aural method, determining the correct pitch of the piano with a tuning fork. It takes approximately an hour to complete a fine tuning, i.e. where the piano has previously been tuned regularly. Instruments that haven't been tuned for a while may take longer, perhaps requiring a "double" tuning. If you follow this link you can see some examples of typical services and costs.

Repairs:

For me, part of the appeal of the piano trade is the use of traditional materials and techniques. I make a point of using these where appropriate, but I also have good modern workshop facilities.

I can repair high gloss polyester and polyurethane casework, whether superficial scratches/scuffs or deeper chips and gashes. More details here.

I have recently completed a course in bridge and soundboard repairs as part of the Renner Recognised Technician programme - Renner are the top German piano components manufacturer - and a Renner piano regulation course, at their new factory in Meuselwitz.

I have also been trained in the installation of Dampp-Chaser humidity control systems for pianos, used worldwide to protect pianos against damage caused by excessive humidity or dry heat. Contact me for further details.

Maintenance:

If your piano is no longer in tip-top condition, it may need a service. I have a 16-point service plan for both grand and upright pianos, each of which ensures that all major systems and components in the piano are checked, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted as appropriate. The standard service can be adapted to individual requirements, and is designed to identify any possible problems with the piano, which can then be rectified before they become more serious. I can supply more details on request.
